Your Introduction to Kayaking: Tips and Tricks for Beginners

Kayaking is a fascinating water sport that can quickly captivate you. With the basic skills, you can start right away, even as a beginner. To help you get started on the right foot, we've compiled some tips and tricks for you.

Essential Equipment for Your First Kayak Trip

The Right Clothing for Kayak Trips

Wearing the right clothing is crucial for comfort and safety while kayaking. Choose breathable and quick-drying materials. A waterproof paddling jacket protects you from splashing water and rain. Depending on the weather, you can also wear leggings or paddle shorts. In summer, when water and air temperatures differ significantly, a wetsuit is recommended. When paddling in winter or very cold conditions, a dry suit or combined dry clothing is a better choice. Additionally, there are various kayaking shoes available, such as low neoprene slippers for summer and high neoprene boots for winter.

Getting Into the Kayak

Getting in from a dock: Place the kayak parallel to the dock. Sit down on the seat with one hand in the center of the kayak to maintain balance. Push yourself off the dock with your hands or paddle and start paddling. For kayaks with a spray skirt, lift it up to avoid sitting on it accidentally.

Getting in from a beach: Position your kayak perpendicular to the shore to face the waves. Sit on the rear edge of the seat, pull your legs inside, and slide your body onto the seat. Lift the spray skirt so that it’s not underneath you, and fasten it by working from back to front. For sit-on-top kayaks, simply place your hands on the sides to get in.

Getting in from the shore: Find a stable surface like a rock. Place the paddle horizontally behind the kayak, so that the blade rests against the rock. Hold the back of the kayak while supporting yourself with one hand on the rock. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the paddle to avoid damaging it.

Basic Paddling Techniques

  • Forward Stroke: Rotate your body, place the paddle in the water, and pull it through.
  • Turning: Make a wide sweeping motion on one side.
