Overview & Paddling Performance
The Gumotex Baraka is the most stable inflatable canoe in the Gumotex range and was specifically designed for rivers and whitewater conditions. Its wide, high-volume hull sits extremely securely on the water and delivers a very controlled paddling feel, even in turbulent sections. Compared to the slimmer Palava, the Baraka offers noticeably greater stability and remains easy to manage in challenging situations.
A key feature is the integrated, closable self-bailing drain at the stern, which allows water to exit the canoe quickly when paddling in whitewater. This is a major advantage on technical river sections. On calm water or lakes, the drain can simply be closed, allowing the canoe to run dry and efficiently.
Areas of Use & Handling
The Baraka truly excels in moving water and light whitewater up to around WW Gr. 4. Its exceptional stability, high buoyancy and direct handling make it easy to control through waves, small drops and changing currents, always providing a strong sense of security.
On calm river sections and lakes, the Baraka can also be paddled comfortably. Due to its wide open-canoe shape, it is not designed for speed like a touring kayak, but it shines on river trips with plenty of gear, family outings and longer journeys where load capacity and stability are key. Thanks to its high payload, it is particularly well suited for expedition-style trips and paddling with children or equipment.
Setup, Comfort & Features
The Gumotex Baraka can be set up within minutes and is quickly ready for use. The two wooden seats and the inflatable centre support are inserted before inflation and add extra rigidity to the hull. The three air chambers are inflated via Push-Push valves to 0.2 bar, giving the canoe its firm and shape-retaining structure.
Standard thigh straps provide excellent control in whitewater, while the open design makes getting in and out easy, even when carrying bulky gear. The generous interior width offers plenty of space for camping equipment, dry bags or additional luggage.
Material & Construction
Like all Gumotex boats, the Baraka is made from proven Nitrilon® material. This multi-layer fabric is highly abrasion-resistant, UV-stable and resistant to temperature changes, making it ideal for rocky riverbeds and frequent whitewater use.
The material dries quickly and is easy to clean. Welded seams ensure long-lasting airtightness, while the reinforced floor construction adds extra protection. Despite its robust build, the Baraka can be packed down surprisingly compact once deflated.
Model History & Conclusion
The Gumotex Baraka was introduced in 2007 and has remained unchanged since 2019. Its proven design has earned an excellent reputation in whitewater use and it remains one of the most popular inflatable canoes for demanding river trips.
Anyone looking for an exceptionally stable, reliable and load-capable inflatable canoe that performs equally well in whitewater and on extended river journeys will find the Gumotex Baraka an outstanding choice. Its versatility, durable materials and impressive payload make it ideal for paddlers who prioritise safety, robustness and long-term reliability.
