Our opinion

The Gumotex Baraka is one of the most stable inflatable canoes in the Gumotex range and was specifically designed for rivers and whitewater. Its wide hull provides excellent stability, while the closable self-bailing drain reliably lets water flow out of the canoe.

Thanks to its direct and responsive handling, the Baraka can be paddled precisely both as a tandem canoe and solo with a double-bladed paddle. This makes it an ideal choice for paddlers looking for a robust, safe and versatile inflatable canoe for moving water.

The Gumotex Baraka is also available as a Starter Set or Touring Set.

Overview & Paddling Performance

The Gumotex Baraka is the most stable inflatable canoe in the Gumotex range and was specifically designed for rivers and whitewater conditions. Its wide, high-volume hull sits extremely securely on the water and delivers a very controlled paddling feel, even in turbulent sections. Compared to the slimmer Palava, the Baraka offers noticeably greater stability and remains easy to manage in challenging situations.

A key feature is the integrated, closable self-bailing drain at the stern, which allows water to exit the canoe quickly when paddling in whitewater. This is a major advantage on technical river sections. On calm water or lakes, the drain can simply be closed, allowing the canoe to run dry and efficiently.

Areas of Use & Handling

The Baraka truly excels in moving water and light whitewater up to around WW Gr. 4. Its exceptional stability, high buoyancy and direct handling make it easy to control through waves, small drops and changing currents, always providing a strong sense of security.

On calm river sections and lakes, the Baraka can also be paddled comfortably. Due to its wide open-canoe shape, it is not designed for speed like a touring kayak, but it shines on river trips with plenty of gear, family outings and longer journeys where load capacity and stability are key. Thanks to its high payload, it is particularly well suited for expedition-style trips and paddling with children or equipment.

Setup, Comfort & Features

The Gumotex Baraka can be set up within minutes and is quickly ready for use. The two wooden seats and the inflatable centre support are inserted before inflation and add extra rigidity to the hull. The three air chambers are inflated via Push-Push valves to 0.2 bar, giving the canoe its firm and shape-retaining structure.

Standard thigh straps provide excellent control in whitewater, while the open design makes getting in and out easy, even when carrying bulky gear. The generous interior width offers plenty of space for camping equipment, dry bags or additional luggage.

Material & Construction

Like all Gumotex boats, the Baraka is made from proven Nitrilon® material. This multi-layer fabric is highly abrasion-resistant, UV-stable and resistant to temperature changes, making it ideal for rocky riverbeds and frequent whitewater use.

The material dries quickly and is easy to clean. Welded seams ensure long-lasting airtightness, while the reinforced floor construction adds extra protection. Despite its robust build, the Baraka can be packed down surprisingly compact once deflated.

Model History & Conclusion

The Gumotex Baraka was introduced in 2007 and has remained unchanged since 2019. Its proven design has earned an excellent reputation in whitewater use and it remains one of the most popular inflatable canoes for demanding river trips.

Anyone looking for an exceptionally stable, reliable and load-capable inflatable canoe that performs equally well in whitewater and on extended river journeys will find the Gumotex Baraka an outstanding choice. Its versatility, durable materials and impressive payload make it ideal for paddlers who prioritise safety, robustness and long-term reliability.

Gumotex Baraka – Questions & Answers

What accessories are included with the Gumotex Baraka?

The Gumotex Baraka is supplied as standard with two sturdy wooden seat boards and an inflatable centre support, which adds extra shape and stiffness to the canoe. Two pairs of thigh straps are also included, providing improved grip and precise boat control, especially in whitewater conditions.

The package further includes a repair kit for minor damage, a valve wrench for the push-push valves and a sponge for removing splash water from the canoe. Everything is completed by a waterproof transport bag with a capacity of 135 litres, allowing the Baraka and all accessories to be stored securely and carried comfortably.

Which additional accessories are recommended for the Gumotex Baraka?

In addition to essential equipment such as paddles, an air pump and a personal flotation device, a canoe trolley is especially recommended for the Gumotex Baraka. It allows the relatively large and robust inflatable canoe to be transported comfortably from the car to the water, even over longer distances.

Solo paddlers will also benefit from using a high-quality double-bladed paddle, as it allows the Baraka to be steered very precisely, particularly in moving water.

How long does it take to set up the Gumotex Baraka?

The Gumotex Baraka is very quick to set up and usually takes only a few minutes to be fully ready for use. First, the two wooden seats and the inflatable centre support are installed, adding extra stability to the canoe. The three air chambers are then inflated one after another: one floor chamber and two side chambers.

All chambers are equipped with easy-to-use push-push valves and are inflated to an operating pressure of 0.2 bar.

How many people can the Gumotex Baraka accommodate, and what is the seating configuration?

The Gumotex Baraka can be used flexibly by one, two or up to three paddlers. When paddled solo, it offers exceptional space for gear, making it particularly well suited for multi-day trips with extensive equipment.

With two paddlers, there is still ample room for touring gear, while the canoe retains its stable and controlled character. A three-person setup is also possible, although interior space becomes noticeably more limited and is therefore better suited to shorter distances. For three-person use, an additional centre seat is required, which is available separately.

What types of water and paddling conditions is the Gumotex Baraka suitable for?

The Gumotex Baraka is designed primarily for fast-flowing rivers and light to moderate whitewater. Its wide, high-volume hull provides excellent stability and allows for controlled paddling even in moving water and smaller rapids.

The Baraka can also be paddled comfortably on flatwater sections and calm lakes, although its open canoe-style design makes it slower than slimmer Gumotex touring kayaks in these conditions. Thanks to its high load capacity, robust construction and predictable handling, the Baraka is well suited for river touring, gear-heavy trips, family outings and sporty whitewater up to around class 4.

How durable and hard-wearing is the Gumotex Baraka?

The Gumotex Baraka is made from extremely durable Nitrilon® material, specifically developed for use on rivers and in light whitewater conditions. This multi-layer fabric is highly abrasion-resistant, UV-stable and insensitive to temperature fluctuations, making it ideal for rocky river sections and frequent landings.

Welded seams ensure excellent airtightness and long service life, even under regular whitewater use. Thanks to its stable construction and the additional inflatable centre support, the Baraka maintains its shape reliably and is considered one of the most durable inflatable canoes in the whitewater segment.

How can the Gumotex Baraka be transported and stored?

Despite its robust construction, the Gumotex Baraka can be folded down compactly after deflation. The included 135-litre transport bag easily accommodates the canoe along with its accessories and can be carried comfortably using the shoulder straps.

With a weight of around 23.5 kg, the Baraka is heavier than other Gumotex models but remains manageable for two people to carry. For storage and transport, a larger car boot or a storage compartment in a camper van is sufficient. Thanks to the fast-drying Nitrilon® material, the canoe can be packed away quickly after paddling and is ready for its next outing in no time.
