Canoe, Kayak or Canadian Canoe? The Key Differences Explained

Kanu, Kajak oder Kanadier? Die wichtigsten Unterschiede einfach erklärt

Canoe, kayak or Canadian canoe? Which term is correct?

If you are heading out on the water, you will quickly come across the terms canoe, kayak and Canadian canoe – but what exactly is the difference between them?

In everyday language, “canoe” is often used to refer only to an open Canadian canoe, but technically it includes both kayaks and Canadian canoes.

Here you will find out the key differences!

Canoe – the umbrella term for kayaks and Canadian canoes

In technical terms, “canoe” is the general term for paddle-powered boats that are moved by muscle power using a paddle.

There are two main types:

Kayak – sporty, low-profile, usually with a closed deck and double-bladed paddle
Canadian canoe – open, spacious, with a single-bladed paddle and higher sides

In everyday use, the word “canoe” is often used only for a Canadian canoe. Strictly speaking, however, it includes both kayaks and Canadian canoes.

Kayak – the sporty, closed-deck boat

Seating position: You sit low in the boat with your back straight and slightly leaning forward. Your legs should be slightly bent so that your knees make contact with the inside of the kayak, helping you become one with the boat.
Paddle: A double-bladed paddle, used alternately on the left and right side of the boat.
Shape: Slim, streamlined and usually with a closed deck.
Best for: Ideal for sporty paddling, lakes, whitewater, sea kayaking and/or longer distances.

The kayak was originally used by the Inuit for hunting trips on cold waters. Today, there are many different types of kayaks – from agile whitewater kayaks to fast sea kayaks.

Canadian canoe – the open, spacious boat

Seating position: You sit higher on a bench or kneel for better stability.
Paddle: A single-bladed paddle, which is dipped into the water on one side only.
Shape: Wider, with higher sides and an open interior.
Best for: Ideal for relaxed tours, family trips and longer journeys with plenty of luggage.

The Canadian canoe was originally developed by the Indigenous peoples of North America and is especially well suited to relaxed paddling on rivers and lakes.
