Getting Started with Kayaking: Tips and Tricks for Beginners

Kayaking is a fascinating watersport that can quickly become addictive. With a few basic skills, even complete beginners can get started right away. To help you avoid common mistakes during your first adventures on the water, we’ve put together some useful tips and tricks for you.

Essential Gear for Your First Kayak Tour

The Right Clothing for Kayak Tours

Choosing the right clothing is essential for both comfort and safety while kayaking. Opt for breathable and quick-drying materials. A waterproof paddling jacket protects you from splashes and rain. Depending on the weather, you can also wear leggings or paddling shorts. In summer, when there is a big difference between water and air temperature, a wetsuit can be a good option. For winter paddling or very cold conditions, a dry suit or other drywear is the better choice. There are also different types of kayaking footwear available, from low neoprene shoes for summer to high neoprene boots for winter.

Getting Into a Kayak

Getting in from a dock:
Place the kayak parallel to the dock in the water. Sit down on the seat while holding the middle of the kayak with one hand to maintain balance. Push yourself away from the dock using your hands or paddle and start paddling. If your kayak has a spraydeck, lift it first so you don’t accidentally sit on it.

Getting in from the beach:
Position your kayak perpendicular to the shoreline so you can head directly into the waves. Sit on the rear edge of the seat, pull your legs inside, and slide onto the seat. Lift the spray skirt so it doesn’t get trapped underneath you, then secure it from back to front. With sit-on-top kayaks, simply place your hands on the sides and climb aboard.

Getting in from the shore:
Find a stable surface such as a rock. Place the paddle horizontally behind the kayak so that the blade rests against the rock. Hold the rear of the kayak while supporting yourself with one hand on the rock. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the paddle to avoid damaging it.

Basic Paddling Techniques

  • Forward stroke: Rotate your torso, place the paddle into the water, and pull it through.
  • Turning: Use a wide sweeping stroke on one side.

Kayak vs. Canoe: Which Is Better for You?

  • Canoe: Perfect for multi-day trips and family outings thanks to the extra space.
  • Kayak: Faster, more stable, and better suited for solo adventures.
