Helaplast Adhesive with Hardener: Steve's Favorite Adhesive

The Helaplast adhesive is perfect for bonding D-rings, keel strips, or other fittings onto inflatable kayaks or Gumotex boats.

This adhesive is much easier to work with than Grabner workshop glue. Before bonding, both surfaces to be glued should be degreased with acetone. Roughening with sandpaper is not necessary. Now, mix the adhesive and hardener in a ratio of 100:5. Then, apply the first layer of adhesive to both surfaces using a brush. Let it dry for 30 minutes. Then, apply a second layer of adhesive and let it dry for another 30 minutes. Now, the adhesive is sufficiently hardened so that the surfaces can be properly aligned without immediately sticking together. Once the surfaces are correctly aligned, warm the adhesive from above with a hairdryer. This reactivates the two layers of adhesive and ensures a perfect bond. Finally, press firmly with as much pressure as possible.

50 ml Tube: Easily sufficient for four D-rings

300 ml Can: Sufficient for 3,600 cm² (equivalent to 6 meters of keel strips)

Mixing and Storage of the Adhesive

The Helaplast adhesive is mixed with the supplied hardener in a ratio of 100:5. Even if the mixing ratio is not exact, satisfactory adhesive performance can be achieved. Ideally, use a container for mixing and then apply the adhesive with a brush. Once the adhesive and hardener are mixed, the mixture is usable for at least 2 hours. The remaining adhesive can be kept for several months if the container is properly sealed.

Applying the Adhesive

Before applying the adhesive to the surfaces to be bonded, they should be degreased with acetone. To do this, wipe both surfaces with a cloth soaked in acetone. It is not necessary to roughen the material with sandpaper. Then, apply the first layer of adhesive to both surfaces using a brush. The surfaces must be completely covered with adhesive. You can brush slightly beyond the area to be bonded. When dry, the adhesive is hardly visible. Sufficient adhesive should be present, especially at the edges, to prevent anything from coming loose. After applying the first layers, allow them to dry for 30 minutes. Then, apply a second layer of adhesive to both surfaces and let it dry for another 30 minutes.

Bonding the Components

Once both adhesive surfaces are dry, the components to be bonded (D-rings, keel strips) can be positioned correctly without sticking to the wrong place. Once everything is properly positioned, briefly heat the adhesive with a hairdryer. It is not necessary to blow directly onto the adhesive; heating the material from above is sufficient. This will make the dry adhesive sticky again, allowing the two layers to bond together. Then, apply pressure to the bonded components as much as possible. Ideally, let the bonded areas dry for 24 hours.
