Overview & On-Water Performance

The Gumotex Thaya is one of the most stable inflatable kayaks on the market and is ideal for anyone looking for a particularly safe and easy-going kayak. Its wide hull and flat dropstitch floor make the boat feel as if it “sticks” to the water, creating a very calm and confidence-inspiring ride. Even beginners and less confident paddlers feel comfortable right away – standing up in the kayak is also easily possible.

Thanks to its generous interior space and high stability, the Thaya is well suited for larger or heavier paddlers as well as for families or dog owners looking for a robust and reliable inflatable kayak.

Use Cases & Handling

The Gumotex Thaya is ideal for relaxed day trips on lakes, calm rivers, and wide bodies of water. The flat dropstitch floor provides excellent stability, but less tracking than models with a pronounced keel. For leisure paddling and relaxed touring, however, the handling is perfectly balanced, safe, and predictable.

With two paddlers, the Thaya offers plenty of freedom of movement, while paddled solo it provides a large amount of space for gear. The kayak also works very well with a child or a dog on board, as the flat floor creates a comfortable and secure lying area.

For narrow creeks or sporty touring, the Thaya is less suitable, as its width and stability come at the expense of agility. With a rudder system, however, it can still be paddled comfortably on larger lakes and longer distances.

Setup, Comfort & Features

The Thaya inflates within just a few minutes and, typical for Gumotex, uses easy-to-handle Push-Push valves. The wide, comfortable air seats with high backrests provide a relaxed seating position, even on longer paddling trips.

Thanks to its modular layout, the kayak can be paddled solo, tandem, or with an additional child. The flat dropstitch floor adds a high level of comfort and is especially suitable for dogs, as it offers a stable and comfortable surface.

With the optional rudder system, straight-line performance improves noticeably, making the Thaya a very touring-friendly recreational kayak.

Material & Build Quality

Like all Gumotex boats, the Thaya is made from robust NITRILON® material – durable, UV-resistant, and easy to maintain. The dropstitch floor provides high stiffness, while the wide side chambers add extra stability.

The material is abrasion-resistant, dries quickly, and remains dimensionally stable even after frequent inflation and deflation. This makes the Thaya ideal for regular use and for families looking for a dependable inflatable kayak.

Model Update & Conclusion

The Gumotex Thaya was introduced in 2019 and has only seen minor updates since then, most recently an improved carrying handle. The proven construction itself has remained unchanged and is considered one of the safest and most stable recreational kayaks in the Gumotex range.

Anyone looking for an extremely stable dropstitch kayak that is ideal for beginners, families, larger paddlers, or touring with a dog will find the Gumotex Thaya to be a reliable and comfortable companion.

Gumotex Thaya – Questions & Answers

What accessories are included with the Gumotex Thaya?

The standard package of the Gumotex Thaya already includes everything you need for immediate use. The kayak comes with two comfortable seats and two adjustable footrests, providing a stable and comfortable seating position. The included fin significantly improves straight-line performance and ensures calm, predictable tracking on the water.

The set also includes a repair kit for minor damage, a valve wrench, a sponge for cleaning, and a robust 100-litre transport bag. This allows the Thaya to be packed away compactly and stored safely.

With this equipment, the Gumotex Thaya is fully outfitted and ready for your next paddling adventures right away.

Which additional accessories are recommended for the Gumotex Thaya?

To unlock the full potential of the Gumotex Thaya, we especially recommend the rudder system. It noticeably improves straight-line tracking and makes manoeuvring easier, particularly on larger lakes or longer stretches of water. Thanks to the Thaya’s excellent stability, the rudder system provides a very relaxed and controlled paddling experience.

For everyday use, essential accessories such as paddles, an air pump, and personal flotation devices are also recommended. If you transport the kayak frequently, a canoe trolley is particularly practical, as it makes moving the wide and stable Thaya from the car to the water much more comfortable.

For paddling with a child, a third seat is available separately.

How long does it take to set up the Gumotex Thaya?

Setting up the Gumotex Thaya is quick and straightforward, even for beginners. With a good air pump, the kayak is ready to use in just a few minutes. It consists of three air chambers – one floor chamber and two side chambers – all equipped with easy-to-use Push-Push valves. The side chambers are inflated to 0.2 bar, while the dropstitch floor is inflated to 0.5 bar.

As with all Gumotex kayaks fitted with a fin, the fin should be inserted into the mount on the underside of the boat before inflating. Once fully inflated, it sits securely in place and improves directional stability on the water.

With a bit of routine, the Thaya is set up within minutes and ready for your next tour.

How many people can the Gumotex Thaya accommodate, and what is the seating configuration?

The Gumotex Thaya can be used flexibly as a single, tandem, or three-person kayak. When paddled solo, it offers plenty of space for gear and is ideal for longer tours or weekend trips. With two paddlers, there is still sufficient room for day gear, and thanks to its width, the kayak remains very stable on the water.

When used with three people, space naturally becomes more limited, but it works well for two adults and a child. An additional seat is required for the three-person configuration and is available separately.

The adjustable seating layout makes the Thaya a versatile and highly family-friendly inflatable kayak.

What types of water and paddling conditions is the Gumotex Thaya suitable for?

The Gumotex Thaya is suitable for a wide range of waters and truly excels on lakes, calm rivers, and wide open stretches of water. Thanks to its exceptional stability, it offers a very safe and reassuring paddling experience, making it ideal for beginners, families, and recreational paddlers.

The Thaya can also handle light whitewater (WW II) without difficulty due to its wide and stable design. For more powerful or technically demanding whitewater, however, a closed kayak is recommended, as the Thaya reaches its design limits in such conditions.

For relaxed tours, family outings, and paddling with a dog, the Thaya is an excellent choice.

How durable and hard-wearing is the Gumotex Thaya?

The Gumotex Thaya is extremely robust thanks to its high-quality NITRILON® material and is perfectly suited for regular use. The outer skin is abrasion-resistant, UV-resistant, and easily withstands contact with rocky or gravel shorelines. The dropstitch floor provides high stiffness while also offering a comfortable standing and resting surface – ideal for children or dogs as well.

The wide side chambers further enhance stability and contribute to the kayak’s long service life. As is typical for Gumotex, all seams and material transitions are manufactured to a very high standard, ensuring durability over many years. The material is easy to clean, dries quickly, and retains its shape even after frequent inflation and deflation.

Anyone looking for a particularly durable recreational kayak for family use, paddling with a dog, or more demanding conditions will find the Thaya to be a highly reliable and long-lasting inflatable kayak.

How can the Gumotex Thaya be transported and stored?

Despite its size, the Gumotex Thaya is very easy to transport and store. Once deflated, the kayak can be folded down compactly and packed into the included 100-litre transport bag. The bag is robustly made and can be comfortably carried like a duffel or over short distances by hand.

The NITRILON® material dries quickly and remains flexible, allowing the kayak to be folded and unfolded repeatedly without any issues, even after extensive use. This makes the Thaya ideal for holidays by car, camper van or camping trips, as well as for anyone looking to store their kayak in a space-saving way.
